3DFX Voodoo5 5500 & ASRock 4CoreDual-Sata2 New Experiment!

Ciao a tutti,
Hello everybody!
Long time ago I bought a Voodoo 5 5500 from a dear friend, this wonderful card gave me great satisfactions, but while time is passing and the hardware evolution  I could not use it any more ...:(
Reading around the Web I met your beautiful Community 3dfxZone/Forumzone that still argued this architecture and supplied assistance and updated drivers to still use more of these wonderful cards 3DFX whit any operative system...
Reading the discussions, I found some about hardware changes to AGP Slot and about changes made directly on the various cards Voodoo (3, 4 and 5), then I thought said:
We make this hell modify on the video card! ;)
This is the video card before the change:

Armed with a lot of patience, I just made a cut at the notch that prevents installing the cards in AGP 2x to AGP 8x slot:

The change was successfully completed but the card did not  want to know about starting on mobo available to me...:brut:
Fortunately that on slot AGP 2x is still working :duo
After many years resting into the drawer, I decided to take out the project, and I began to do different tests always on mobo with AGP 8x but nothing, it did not want to boot...:(
The only card i did not try was my dear old Abit AN7 with Nforce network chipset 2 ... what a donkey was I.......:lin:
So, before installing the Voodoo , I made the settings in bios with my  Ati AIW 9800 Pro:
I set the voltage of Agp 1.65:

poi ho impostato l'Agp Data Transfer in AUTO e l' Agp Aperture Size a 64M:
Then I set the Agp Data Transfer to AUTO and the Agp Aperture Size to 64M:

At this point I saved the settings and I rebooted the PC
Then the restart, I turned the Pc Off and Removed the ATI card:

ed ho installato la Voodoo V5 5500:
And I installed the Voodoo V5 5500:

incrocio le dita e avvio il PC...
Miracolooo!
Cross the fingers and boot the PC...
Miracle!
The Voodoo Boooots! (Voice of the verb boot) :ahah:
Immediaty i come in the bios:
The first thing I do is set manually the Agp 2x:

salvo e riavvio...
faccio caricare l'XP e...
Save and restart...
I load the XP and...

finalmente ecco a voi una 3DFX V5 5500 AGP Mod su AN7 NFORCE2 AGP 8x!    :D  :duo
Finally here there is a 3DFX V5 5500 AGP Mod on AN7 NFORCE2 AGP 8x!

AGP 8x @ AGP 2x/Universal Modify

Allora mi son messo subito all'opera...
Considered the motherboard is compatible with the standard AGP 2X (except for the voltage ... :brut:) I said to myself:
Why does not make slot AGP AN7 Universal?
Then I have immediately put to the work...
I bought drill battery, the tip for steel from 2 mm - 2.5 - 3 - 3.5 and I started the operation :duo:
With the tip of 2 I began to drill for about 1 cm deep between in the two channels which corresponding to the notch:

I then continued to enlarging the holes with the tip 2.5, 3 and 3.5 getting this result:

Then with a screwdriver I did leverage notch upward:

piegando la tacchetta in questo modo:
Bending the notch in this way:

poi ho fatto leva verso il basso:
Then I lever down:

piegando la tacchetta in questo modo:
Bending the notch in this way:

Then with a pair of tweezers I extract the notch that now was detached from the slot AGP:

Then with cutter I removed all the pieces of plastic and any rest in the slot, reaching this result:

Finally I made the test installation with an old vga Ati Agp 2x:

Now that everything was ok, I pulled out from the Dashboard Protected another Voodoo V5 5500 AGP still original and I installed:

This Change can be performed also on other Motherboards with AGP 8x
;) :)

Change Voltage AN7 for power AGP8x@AGP2x to v3.3

Bene ragassuoli,
La Modifica è Riuscitaaaaaaa! :duo
Well boys,
Change is Success! :duo
This Guide can be considered as Universal, at least for the Chipset NForce 2, the others need to be tested...
I waiting for draft a list Motherboards and Chipset that support the standard AGP 2x and the eventual modification of Power/AGP.
Well at first I got the AGP Datasheet with all Pinout, including the Moterboard.
I identified points of power and I marked AN7 them on the back side with a pen, (I should to try them one-by-one and if they did not work I would have fed all in the meantime, in a few words MoboBurning  :D )
Then I welded wire a 20 cm long to pin A34 like this:

To pass to the other side I used one of the fixing holes for the cooler chipset that I already replaced:

I fixed it with some insulating tape and I turn the motherboard to mount a mollex female on a wire:

3.3 V that I needed, I took from a power cable S-Ata of the Power Supply, I disconnected the wire, and also here I installed a Mollex male:

I deliberately reversed the sense of power on the mollex to prevent in the future, to insert a cable directly to the Power 12v and 5v of On the power change of AGP ;)
I assembled again everything, and I started using PC vga Ati 4m Agp2x
The PC is running and also this time I go into bios and check voltages:

As you can see the power of the AGP changed is 3.39v
Now I installed the V5 5500 and I started windows XP:

Tutto OK!
La Voodoo non è più Instabileeeee!!!!! :ok:
OK!
The Voodoo is Unstable no longer!!!!! :ok:
I installed the 3DMark 2001 SE and I did the first Test on Agp Mod:

ragazzi che dire...
L' Esperimento è Riuscito con Successo! :ok:
Materiale necessario per la modifica:
n° 1 filo lungo 20 centimetri
n° 1 saldatore a punta da 25w
n° 1 attacco mollex femmina

3DFX Voodoo5 5500 Power Direct 3.3v!

Changing the comb Card Voodoo5 Agp from 2x to Agp 4x/8x, I have the possibility to install on every card AGP slot, I just need to modify the Mainboard as described in the previous post.
But have to modify, every time a Motherboard only to test the Voodoo seemed a little excessive, so I decided to make the Voodoo5 totally independent from Motherboard and Power it Directly.
Before proceeding with the Change, I checked all Pin Mainboard that providing the famous 3.3 v were connected together without Voodoo inserted in the slot, so with a Digital Tester and a lot of patience I start working.
This is the table that defines all Pinout that are supplied on the various slot Agp from 3.3 v, 1.5 and Universal:

The Power Pinout we are interessed in are Vddq:

A34    B34
A40    B40
----    B47
A52    B52
A58    B58
A64    B64

A total No. 6 Points of Power.
As you can see from the diagram, the B47 is Pin Single Side as feeder Power, even if its signal is passing on the Voodoo PCBs, but is not connected to the A47 because Pin has another type of signal.
However, what we want is the Powered Pin B47 from Side "A".
Now we see the disposition of Contact an comb on the Video Voodoo5 card as Image, I use that of Voodoo5 still  whole and with no change in order to no get confusion:

Side "B"

Side "A" side Solders

As you can see from the image the welding circled points are re marked for not  create confusion, furthermore it can be noted that track of the Pin A47 does correspond to not the point of welding, because, as anticipated earlier, the latter coming from on another signal type.
Now turn to Mod Video Card Voodoo5 5500:

As you can see in the Figure 1 and No. 2, I take the occasion to install a Mollex to Power Fans of the Coolers.

Ora passiamo all'Installazione:
Here you see perfectly all the work made the Wire Weld of Power.
Before proceeding with the Solders, I had to softly scrape the Protective paint covering points of welding, in this way the true color that is copper came out.
Then I laid a strip of insulant tape over right the points Welding letting then discovered, so that we can make the Solders without risking touch the underlying Slopes.
We must be very careful to not touch the comb Video Card with the sealer, it happened to me and I had to remove with "Much Patience" welding that stored and recreate the existing spaces between a contact and the other to save Short circuit.
Then I covered the wires with an other strip of insulation tape and I set them with 2 ligament Electrician from the bracket support Coolers.
Last action that could be done even before the Weld Video Wire on the board, I installed a different Mollex and deliberately reversed and direction that already existing on the board, just to avoid giving the 12v connecting accidentally a cable of Power PSU, and I fixed with the Hot Glue so can be connected directly without the attack that moves on the board, excluding the risk of damages .
Now we can install:

For this occasion I dusted my old dear Abit An7 and I Installed in Case for this test.
You can see from the images that Installation on the Mother board does not change, also because Solders does not prevent the right installation of Video Card in the slot Agp of Mobo.
Assembling cables is very simple, even if having corrisponding two attacks at the Mollex of Power there found any obstacle.

3dfx Voodoo5 5500 Bus Agp2x @ Bus Agp4x !

During various Tests I have done on 3DFX Voodoo5 5500 in my possession I noticed that the card, if it was started with the original slot voltage in Agp Overvolt that was 1.65 v, started normally, allowed to enter Windows.
Entered in Windows I noticed that the card, perhaps for compatibility, working with a single chip.
With the V-Control Utility and Everest Ultimate Edition I checked the operating parameters card:

As you can see from the picture, the card works with the Agp off, but there is the possibility to select also the Bus of Agp 4x, which is very strange because the Voodoo is Agp2x.
After various changes I don't care about this thing, also because the Voodoo worked perfectly.
A few days ago I noticed a Thread in 3dfxzone where the user "m14radu" could start a Voodoo 5500 on a MSI K8T Neo2-F V2.0 increasing the voltage of 1.85 to Agp v could also activate Bus Agp 4x and to complete all the tests and Benchmarck, the only problem was that if he also activated mode Sli (double Gpu) Voodoo Blocked... then I said to myself:
An ghe Quel che tocca (there is something wrong :D)
I could starting Voodoo with 1.65v and enter Windows, the single-Gpu and could select the Bus Agp 4X, but it was too unstable and the system went Blocked.
m14radu with 1.85v was able to start Voodoo, enter into Windows, select the Bus Agp4x and do various tests, but always using Gpu Single mode.
If you start with the Voodoo v 3.3 work perfectly, I can get in Windows, I can do all the Test, I want play the Games, all in sli mode (double Gpu) but with the Bus Agp2x, 4x mode is not activated.
The problem was the power of Agp slot, but I could not select two voltages, or up to 1.65v or 3.3v.
I found the solution building an adapter Mollex Male/Female with a Potentiometer by 50k.

With the adapter, I found the maximum limit for the system to recognize the Voodoo 5500 as Agp4x, the limit is between 1.65 and 2.10 v.
This is the screen before restart Windows:

In the image can be seen clearly that the Agp is Off, the option of V-Control that allow to activate the Bus Agp to 4x is not activated, Vddq of Agp is 3.3 v, and the Voodoo is working with a Gpu (Sli Off).

After restart I entered in the Bios and by the Potentiometer I took  the Vddq voltage to 1.95v/2.00v.

From this image can be seen clearly that the card was recognized as Agp4x and the option V-Control can activate the Bus of Agp 4x is now selectable.
The Vddq is 2.00v and Voodoo uses one Gpu.
With the Potentiometer, I the increase of Vddq Agp to 3.30v, and then I active all the options V-Control.

We see clearly that the Agp is active with the Bus Agp 4x and Voodoo is working in Sli (double GPU).
And now enjoy the Video:

Quindi ho recuperato tutti i componenti e ho iniziato l'opera... :ok:
After years of rest, I decided it was time to give this project back to life and give 3DFX fans the chance to fully enjoy it.
To do this I would have had to put the hardware of this discussion up for sale, but not before having reviewed it properly and installed in a Case with the necessary components to be able to use it as a PC RetroGamer.
So I recovered all the components and started the work ...:ok:
The first to have a Refresh was the old 3Dfx Voodoo 5 5500 with Agp Mod and v3.3 Mod.
After a first superficial cleaning, I decided to replace the old Cooler Master coolers with new ones from Zalman, model ZM-NB32K now unavailable on the market.
Before replacing the heatsinks:

Dopo la sostituzione dei dissipatori:
After replacing the heatsinks:

The new Zalman heat sinks that have undergone a lapping of the contact surface before installation, do not have fixing points for the fans, so I had to come up with something as usual ...;)
I got some high temperature glue:

I screwed the screws into the fan holes and I did some tests to fit the screws in the heatsink fins.
Once I found the right balance, I created some silicon blocks at the heatsink fins and I immediately installed the fans by drowning the screws of the Fans in the glue plugs:

The beauty of these Zalman heatsinks is that they have adjustable clips that, after having positioned them to fit the holes on the 3Dfx, you can click on the PCB of the board as if they were the chipset holes on the Mainboard:

One of the holes in the 3Dfx was wider than the others due to the old Mods to install the Cooler Master heat sinks.
Here too I had to find a solution and come up with something ...;)

I used an old insulating washer and a metal washer with the precise hole to trigger the Zalman clip.
I painted the washer several times with a black paint marker, even after the photo below:

As can be seen from the photo, the Zalman heatsink clips are fixed perfectly and without problems.
It can also be noted that the old Mod v3.3 has been resized to a single power point.
A double-sided adhesive clip has also been added to fix the feeding wire v3.3 of the agp.
The welding point chosen does not correspond to that of the Mainboard to avoid unintentionally feeding the Mollex on the Mobo.
After having performed numerous and various tests, I can affirm that the stability of the 3Dfx does not change and has a layout more pleasant than before.
I performed a first summary cleaning on the motherboard and the various components:

And I ran the first tests that still show the 3Dfx with the old v3.3 Mod:

Benchmark tests and various open tools:

During the various tests, I prepared in the Bios configurations that can be selected with the F7 key:

Quindi i Video Test Finale:
Then the Final Video Test:
Both Video Tests have a Storyboard with photos of all the Mods treated by this Thread plus the latest Mods that are:
Abit An7 Mainboard:
1) Added heat sink on NVIDIA nForce2 MCP-T chip with thermal conduction pad of Gelid GP-Extreme 12W / m · K.
2) Repositioned Mollex of the Mod @ v3.3 next to the Chipset Heatsink.
3) Added CPU Heatsink Potentiometer with 5400 Rpm fan.
3DFX v5 5500:
4) Very light lapping Chip VSA-100.;) :)
5) Mod @ v3.3 revision passing from 6 power supply / welding points to one, Pin A40.
This pin does not correspond intentionally to that of the Mainboard in order not to feed the Mollex of the Mobo-Mod @ v3.3.
6) Added adhesive clamp for NewMod v3.3 wire fastening.
7) Replacement of Cooler Master heatsinks with Zalman model ZM-NB32K with adjustable fixing clips.
8) Lapping the contact surface of the Zalman to improve the heat exchange with the Vsa-100s.
The thermal paste used is the Arctic MX-4.
9) Fastening original 3Dfx fans on I said Zalman with silicone at high temperatures (300 °).
500W NEO power supply:
10) Modification with addition of Mollex to v3.3.
