Half Life 2 Tweak Guide
[Page 2] Essential Optimization
Before getting into any Half Life 2 specific settings and tweaks, this section covers the obligatory system optimization information I include in all my guides. If you've followed this advice recently from one of my other guides, you can skip this section.
I strongly urge you to take some time and follow the advice below if you truly want Half Life 2, and indeed every other game you own, to run at its fastest and most trouble-free.
Please note that the following guides have not been updated for Windows XP SP2. I am currently developing a Windows XP Tweaking Companion which will contain the following information - and much more - in one fully up-to-date guide. For the moment though, the information in these guides is still relevant and will improve your system performance.
The place to start is my System Optimization Guide for Gamers. This guide provides detailed information on where to find the latest BIOS and drivers for your system, how to install them "cleanly", understanding more about the hardware components that you're running, what overclocking is, how to correctly test an overclocked system for stability and so forth. Everything is explained from scratch, and technical jargon is kept to a minimum.
Once you've updated all your drivers and tweaked your BIOS, the next step is to examine my walkthrough guide to optimizing Windows: WinXP Tweaking: From Reformat to Relax. It has every major WindowsXP performance tweak in an easy to follow walkthrough style. This is the one guide you have to read if you only read one of these guides. It is vital to smooth, fast, stable gaming performance.
If you have time, make sure you check my second XP Guide, WinXP Tweaking: From Relax to Righteous, because it contains a wealth of information to complement the first one. Everything from troubleshooting common Windows error codes to cosmetic and convenience tweaks.
If you are wondering what Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering are, and how they affect a game's visual quality and performance, check out my Simple Antialiasing and Anisotropic Guide for all the details in an easy to understand format.
Finally, if you run an ATI graphics card, I have recently written a comprehensive ATI Catalyst Tweak Guide which covers absolutely everything about the latest ATI Catalysts, and all associated graphics issues. It's a must-read for ATI graphics card owners, and even Nvidia owners will benefit from reading the guide as much of the information is generically applicable to all graphics cards. I will be releasing a separate Nvidia Forceware Tweak Guide in the near future.
Note that all of the above guides are written solely by me, but some are on TweakTown.com (where I used to write), so if you click the links you may be taken to that site. Please be patient, as sometimes TweakTown can take a while to load, or may be temporarily offline ? I have no control over that site, so try again later. The ATI guide is much more recent, and is right here on TweakGuides.com. If you have any issues or questions about using any of these guides, Email Me.
The next section goes into more detail about specific troubleshooting tips which address common Half Life 2 issues.
