1. Download the official Generals patch 1.05. You could install DirectX9 if you don't already have it, but this is not necessary.

2.
If you are using windows 98/me, download and use Amigamerlin 2.9 3rd party 3dfx drivers:
http://www.voodoofiles.com/9490
If you are using windows XP/2000, download and use Amigamerlin 2.5SE 3rd party 3dfx drivers:
http://www.voodoofiles.com/9488
If using windows XP/2000, the first time you install the drivers you will need to set the following 3dfx tools D3d setting: Rendering Color Depth - Force 32bpp Rendering. Then start up a d3d application you know will work, other than Generals. If you don't have any other, use the d3d test from the dxdiag application by clicking Start->Run then typing dxdiag, press enter. Click display then click "test direct3d". As a general rule, if these tests crash, you need to reinstall the above-mentioned 3rd party drivers. After the tests run, you can set the 3dfx tools D3d setting: Rendering Color Depth - back to "software controlled".

Use the following settings in 3dfx tools with the Amigamerlin drivers:
D3d Settings:
Auto mip mapping - Enabled
Anti-Aliasing - Fastest Performance
Edge Aliasing - Disabled
Mip map dithering - Disabled
Speed settings - Fastest (vsync disabled)
Each of these settings must be as listed above, but all of the other settings will not prevent gameplay regardless of how they are set.
Additional recommended tools settings, not necessary but good for gameplay and graphics:
D3d Settings:
Maximum Pending Buffers - Default
D3D Guardband Clipping - Enabled

3. Extract the .dll file and the .ini file found in this zip file
http://members.fortunecity.com/thruyersternum/voodoogenerals.zip
and place them both in your generals.exe game directory.
These files were acquired using 3dAnalyze 2.16a with the following items checked "force sw t&l", "kyro zbuffer/stencil fix", "voodoo flicker fix" - but this doesn't matter to you.

4. Stick a shortcut to generals.exe on your desktop if there isn't already one, and add the following 3 items to the runline (after the last " in the shortcut):
-noshellmap -nologorcrash -ignoresync
So the target box should look like something like this: "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Command and Conquer Generals\Generals.exe" -noshellmap -nologorcrash -ignoresync

5. Go ahead and try the game and if everything works you can forget the rest of this, otherwise:

6. Load the game, and set all your graphics settings at minimum; the screen resolution doesn't matter though. (Select Custom graphics settings to tweak everything down to minimum). Put the texture resolution slider all the way down, and have NOTHING checked in the options. (To start with this is, later on you can turn up the settings).
Exit the game now and restart your computer now before trying anything more.
Your objective now is to simply get a skirmish game running for 10 seconds without crash and be able to hit the Escape key in game without a crash, if you can do these 2 things, the rest of the game will run without crash. You may be able to load a game other ways but it is easiest to use the single player skirmish first because the levels load the fastest. So use stable settings - start a skirmish game using the map "Final Crusade", with both sides "China". "Silent River" is another stable map you could use first. Right after or while loading this map, it should crash, if it doesn't, skip to step 8. Load the game exactly as you just did once again using the map "Winter Wolf" and if works go to step 8, if it crashes again, try "Desert Fury" (the third try), and if works go to step 8, and if it still doesn't work go to step 7. Using this 2 and 3 map combination the game always works on my system so you may want to try restarting and trying this step again if step 7 gets you nowhere.

7. If you get a blue screen, which you shouldn't, you need to reinstall your drivers and then you shouldn't have this problem. You should have crashed back to desktop, now start the game exactly as you did before, and chances are it will crash at a different time. It seems like each time it crashes, it automatically fixes the problem it had on the previous crash, until it crashes about 4 times. If the game crashes again, load the game again with a different skirmish level. Keep trying to load -different- skirmish levels, try each one twice (but never 1 level more than 2 times) until the game runs for 10 consecutive seconds without crash when you press the escape key, then proceed to step 8. Restart your computer if the game crashes more than 7 times and then try the level combination described in step 6 again.

8. The game should be in a much more stable state now. Now you can probably turn up some graphics settings but don't try it just yet. You can immediately exit out of your skirmish game and start up training or some other campaign. If you get yet another crash, try loading the exact campaign you just did, exactly as you did once again and it should work, assuming your graphics options are stable. Never turn up texture resolution all the way, that didn't work for me, KEEP IT AT MINUMUM FOR BEST STABILITY. Also, using the "behind buildings" graphics option causes vehicles and buildings to disappear so don't use it.
Once you have played the game for a while and it seems stable:
The graphics items you check are up to you, you will get increased performance leaving them unchecked, but the game looks better when you turn on the effects. You could turn up particle detail to about 1/3 or higher, since that doesn't make much of a difference.
Texture resolution set to 1/2 will likely cause a crash, but it may be worth a try for the increased visual quality.
With my voodoo5, I now find it best to play at 1980x960, with minimum texture resolution.
Now after even more playing, it seems certain single player campaign levels are prone to crash unexpectedly. Just keep trying and save often. I have never had a crash playing multiplayer (LAN) games!
